It found one in 25 people do not take a bath or shower, and one in 33 never brush their teeth.
Instead, the French slap on a liberal amount of perfume and cosmetics to mask body odour and smell sweet.
Nine out of 10 women and half of men spend a total of £12million a day on the products - and take their time putting them on.
Adults are in the bathroom for between 48 and 56 minutes every day, the survey of 10,000 people discovered. The statistics are published in "24 Hours in France - An Unusual Portrait of France and the French", a booklet printed by the weekly Le Point magazine.
Apart from indulging in the more basic activities, the study found 14 per cent make telephone calls, eight per cent sing and six per cent smoke in the bathroom. One per cent admitted to eating there.
